Trice Battles Through Tough Weekend at Oulton Park
Toby Trice delivered a performance filled with tenacity, strategic insight and determined recovery at Oulton Park, as the Porsche Sprint Challenge GB served up its share of highs and hard knocks in the third round of the championship.
Although the final results didn’t fully reflect the outright pace of the #22 machine, Toby and the Clean Racing team showcased their trademark grit and precision in overcoming unexpected challenges across all three races of the weekend.
“Oulton was definitely one of those weekends where the results didn’t quite do the performance justice,” Toby commented. “We had incredible pace throughout but also some tough luck. Still, I feel proud of what we achieved and how we turned it around.”
From the opening laps of free practice, the car felt strong and well-set for the tight and technical layout of Oulton Park. Clean Racing had dialled in a setup that delivered balance and confidence. But heading into qualifying, brake issues emerged that would play a role throughout the early part of the weekend.
Despite the difficulties, Toby’s qualifying session was very close. He placed P4, just 0.035s off pole, with lap times reflecting the fierce competition that continues to define this year’s championship.
“The series is incredibly competitive right now,” Toby said. “To be that close to pole and still line up fourth shows how hard everyone is pushing. We had a little issue on the brakes that cost us time, but the team nailed the strategy and gave us two perfect windows for our new tyre runs.”
Race 1 proved chaotic, with rain threatening the circuit mid-race. Opting for slick tyres, like the rest of the grid, Toby battled to adapt to the wet conditions, having never raced Oulton Park in the rain before. A small mistake saw him drop back, but a composed recovery drive saw him regain places and cross the line in P4. Post-race, a penalty for Tom Bradshaw elevated Toby to a P3 podium finish.
Race 2 was tougher. A heavy impact at the hairpin on the opening lap caused rear suspension damage, unsettling the car’s handling. Later in the race, another hit pushed Toby off the circuit. Despite the challenges, he managed to bring the car home in P8.
“That second race was a rough one,” he admitted. “The car was a real handful after that contact. I could feel the rear end going and it just got worse. But we kept going and made sure we got it home.”
But it was Race 3 where the tide turned. With the brake issues finally resolved, Toby was back on the offensive. Starting P8, he made an aggressive and clinical charge through the pack, climbing to P6 early on. A race-long battle with Dan Zelos saw Toby applying relentless pressure until the final corner, where he forced a mistake and made the move stick into Turn 1.
“Dan drove a brilliant defensive race and it made for some awesome TV,” said Toby. “It was a clean, hard fight and one of those battles that really gets the blood pumping. That final overtake felt great.”
The strong finish was a positive note to close out the weekend, even if the overall points haul meant Toby now sits P2 in the championship, just eight points adrift of Bradshaw.
“The goal was to extend the championship lead, but after the setbacks, it became about damage limitation,” Toby explained. “We’re still right in the hunt and I’m proud of how we handled everything.”
Clean Racing’s atmosphere remained upbeat despite the setbacks. Toby praised his team’s resilience and professionalism, particularly the efforts of engineer Peter Sieber and the wider crew.
“Everyone kept pushing with nothing but positivity,” he said. “That’s where this team really shines.”
The weekend also saw strong representation from Toby’s sponsors and partners, with guests in attendance experiencing the highs and challenges of motorsport firsthand.
“Seeing our partners enjoy the weekend, even when things didn’t go entirely our way, means the world,” Toby said. “Their continued support is something I’m incredibly grateful for.”
As always, Racing For Fertility was at the heart of the campaign. The initiative received strong trackside commentary mentions, and Toby continues to be a powerful voice for raising awareness around male fertility challenges within the motorsport community.
“We’re reaching people in spaces they might not expect, and that’s exactly why this campaign matters,” he reflected.
Next up is Knockhill—a circuit that Toby has never raced before but is eagerly anticipating.
“It’s going to be a steep learning curve,” he said. “But I’m excited. The track looks brilliant, and heading to Scotland is a great opportunity to grow the fan base. We’ll be fully prepped and ready.”
With momentum, passion and professionalism at the core, Team Trice leaves Oulton Park even more determined to fight for the 2025 title.
